Brexit. Good or Bad?

Great Britain. Once a great empire, now a circus, Brexit is its latest and greatest act yet. After many years of clowning around and trying to get a deal, the British people have settled for a rather unfavorable deal instead of leaving with a “no-deal Brexit.” That being said, Brexit was the best option for the economy and people.  It was the crucial step enabling the government to finally gain full control of its own country. Anyone who thinks that Britain should remain in the European Union should seriously reconsider.

Boris Johnson finally got us a out of the European Union. But its now a deal that is worse than a no deal brexit! Nice one!

Brexit, the British exit from the European Union, has finally happened. As of January 31, 2020, England is no longer part of the declining system known to mankind as the EU. The EU is a system of what used to be 28 countries (now 27) that would have the “benefits” of free trade and free movement for the people who live in the EU to move to anywhere else in the EU. (BBC News) However, this introduced a big issue to the UK, because this allowed huge masses of people to immigrate from places of conflict to other places in the EU such as Greece, Italy, and Spain. The EU would then gladly let those people become citizens. After that happens, the immigrants immigrate to the UK, and bam, all that money that the British taxpayers paid, are spent giving the immigrants accommodation and money, instead of developing the country for the better (Wikipedia). For this reason alone, many people voted to leave the EU. The UK needed to take control of its borders, and Brexit was what made it possible. Also, the false sense of security in free trade is finally gone. The UK can now extend its trade with China, and other global powerhouses without the EU holding them back (Rana Mitter). This means that the economy will start to rise, and the standard of living will increase.

In the book, Brexit and Beyond,  the author writes “But Brexit is not the only major crisis the EU has experienced in recent years. Rather, it has experienced, and to some extent is still experiencing, a series of crises.” This emphasizes the fact that the EU has had many problems, and it is the reason why Brexit is happening because the UK does not want to be in the midst of the problem anymore. Business Insider’s article explains the many problems that are growing in Europe. One of these problems include the unemployment of the locals. This comes down to the EU’s lack of border control, and structure, so that everyone who is coming from other countries are getting job positions, and leaving the native Europeans unemployed. The authors of an academic journal: What Does Google Trends Tell Us about the Impact of Brexit on the Unemployment Rate in the UK? explained how Brexit has caused unrest among the immigrants in Britain, hence they have left Britain for Europe, and now the employment rates of the native British people are finally going up. Hence the reason why Brexit was the wake-up call that has led to changes that finally benefit the taxpayer, and the citizens of Britain. Another big problem with the EU is the number of terror attacks or plans for terror attacks that have luckily been defused. Brexit has let the country take control of its borders more effectively, hence there will be less likelihood of a terrorist attack happening.

Even though the referendum resulted in favor of Brexit, many people voted to remain. In the Wikipedia article: Causes of the vote in favour of Brexit, the authors wrote how 68% of the people who voted to remain had a college degree, while 70% of the people who voted to leave had GCSEs as their highest level of education, but don’t let these facts fool you. The big reason why they wanted to remain was that they “value the economic benefits of globalization, the Single Market, and the European membership,”  but the thing is that the argument is completely invalid. In fact, it is self-contradictory. The single market allows for free trade among the countries in the EU but makes it impossible for the UK to make any sort of trade deals with China, hence Britain cannot globalize if it remains in the EU.

Britain has finally completed its journey to being free from the bonds of the European Union. The country is now able to progress and fully take control of its borders, trade deals, and decide what they want for themselves. There is no solid reason for the local people of Britain to want to remain. We can conclude that Brexit was, in fact, the best thing to happen to the UK.

Reflection:

When we were told to write an essay about a worldview that we had some sort of interest in. In all honesty, I was going to write another essay about how much better Airbus was than Boeing. But I decided not to, because i believe that I have already made my point with my credo presentation. So i decided to write about Brexit. I thought that it would be an interesting topic where I could do some proper research about. I spent a lot more time than I wanted to on this paper, and I put a lot of effort into this essay, so I hope that you enjoyed reading it.

  1. First things first, GREAT introduction. You managed to set up the parallel between Britain and a circus and give the audience a clear synopsis of your paper. For your points, I think your first and second points are kind of similar, so you didn’t need to split the paragraph. Sometimes your tone is slightly too casual for a research paper (eg. 2nd paragraph, “and BAM”). Your voice is great though; I can almost hear you speaking as I read the paper. Few minor grammatical errors throughout, but it’s not a big deal.

(By the way, do you really like the word “hence”?)

    Nice essay though!
